2.The correct way should be done like that:
$4357 + $230 = $4587
So, Tim spent $4587.

Ben's mistake is that he plus. Therefore, he should minus. Ben has actually made 2 mistake as I already mentioned 1. The second mistake that Ben made was, he only did 1 step. But, there was 2.
2. This is the correct way of doing the question:
