Question L:

Fred spent $4357 on a tour. Tim spent $230 more than Fred.
How much did Tim spend on the tour?

Amy’s solution: 4357 - 230 = 4127
Tim spent $4127.
There is something wrong with Amy’s solution.

1. Explain the mistake in Amy’s solution.
2. Show how you would find the answer to the problem.

Question M:

The mass of a lion is 180kg.
A cow is 36kg lighter than the lion.
Find the total mass of the two animals.

Ben’s solution: 180 + 36 = 216
The two animals have a mass of 216 kg.

There is something wrong with Ben’s solution.
1. Explain the mistake in Ben’s solution.Show how you would find the answer to the problem.

Question H:

Mary has 60 ice-cream sticks. Ted has 150 more ice-cream sticks than Mary.
Samy has 50 fewer ice-cream sticks than Ted.
How many ice-cream sticks do they have altogether?

Tony’s solution: 60 + 150 = 210
210 - 50 = 160

210 +160 = 370
They have 370 ice-cream sticks altogether.

There is something wrong with Tony’s solution.
1. Explain the mistake in Tony’s solution.
2. Show how you would find the answer to the problem.

  5. Question M:1]Ben,you must find the mass of the cow first because it has 2 steps.

2]the first step is:180-36=144 and the next step is:180+144=224.
The totsl mass of the both animals are 224kg.

    Question L :

He should have added $4357 to $230 instead to get $4587.

    Question M:
He should have substract 36 from 180, to get 144kg.

    Question H:

    He forgot to add in Mary's sticks, so he should add 60 + 210 + 160 = 430 sticks.

  8. Question L:

    $4357+$230=$4587
Tim spent $4587 on the tour.
Amy should not minus because Amy must be careful of the word more.

    Question M:

    180-36=144
    180+144=324
The total mess of the two animals are 324kg.
Ben should not minus because of the word lighter.

    Question H:

    60+150=210
    210-50=150
    210+150=360
    360+60=420
They have 420 ice-cream stick altogether.
Tony has forgotten to add Mary's ice-cream sticks.

It should be + not -.Aswer:4357+230=4587
    Tim spend 4587

    Question M:
Ben you should take the lion's mass-36,then you will get the cow's mass ,then you add the lion and cow's mass then you will get the answer.
    Question H:
Tony you must take 60+150=210,so Ted will have 210.You have to take 210-50=60,so Samy will have 60. Then you take60+210+60=330.
Answer statement:They will have 330 altogether.

  10. Question L:
4357-230 is wrong because Fred spent $4357 on a tour. Tim spent $230 more than Fred.
    So,it must be 4537+230

  11. Question M:
Ben’s solution: 180 + 36 = 216 it is wrong because ben must find the total lenth of the cow.
First, take 180-36 then add the answer to the lion.

Samy has 50 fewer ice-cream sticks than Ted.
How many ice-cream sticks do they have altogether? first,60+150 then the answer-50then the answer+50then the answer+60

  14. Question L:
Amy must not subtract but to add it. ($4357 + $230 = $4767) So the answer is $4767.
    Question M:
Ben must not add but to subtract, then add the lion length.(180 - 36 = 144) So the answer is 144.
    Question H:
He had add the answer, 210 and need to add 50 not subtract.(201 + 50 = 251) So the answer is 251.

  15. Question L:
    Amy must not subtract he must add.$4357 + $230 = $4587;So,the answer is $4587.

    Question M:
Ben must not add he must subtract and the 36kg is not the total mass of the cow kg.180kg - 36kg = 144kg 180kg + 144kg = 322kg;So,the total mass of the two animal is 322kg.

    Question H:
    Tony had forgotten to add Mary ice-cream sticks so the total of ice cream stick is wrong.60 + 150 = 210 210 - 50 = 160 210 + 160 + 50 =420;So the total is 420 ice cream stick.

  16. Question L:
    1. In order to find how much Tim spend on a tour, we should plus the amount of how much Fred spend and plus the $230(the amount that Tim spend more then Fred). Amy should not minus because in the passage, it gave the clue, MORE, to us. So, this already tells us that we should plus.

2.The correct way should be done like that:
    $4357 + $230 = $4587
    So, Tim spent $4587.

  17. Question M:
    1. In order to find out the mass of the two animals, we have to minus to find the mass of the cow and add the mass of the cow and the mass of the lion. But, what is Ben's mistake? Ben's mistake is that he plus. Therefore, he should minus. Ben has actually made 2 mistake as I already mentioned 1. The second mistake that Ben made was, he only did 1 step. But, there was 2.

    2. This is the correct way of doing the question:

    180kg - 36kg = 144kg
    180kg + 144kg = 322kg
So, the total mass of the 2 animals is 322kg.

  18. Question H:
1.Tony had made a mistake. He had forgotten to add in Mary's ice-cream sticks. So, the total amount of the ice-cream sticks are wrong.

    2. This is the way of doing:
    150 + 60 = 210
    210 - 50 = 160
    210 + 160 + 60 = 420
So, the total amount of ice-cream sticks they have altogether is 420

  19. Question L

Amy,your answer is wrong. You are suposeto add not subtract (4357+230=4857)So, the answer is 4857!

    Question M

Ben,you must find the mass of the cow first.step1(180kg-36kg=144kg)step2 (180kg+144kg=324kg)so the answer is 324 kg!

    Question H

Tony, you must find how many does Ted and Samy have the ice- cream sticks then find out how many they have altogether.
    60+150=210,210-50=160 and 60+210+160=430
    So, the answer is 430!

  20. Question L:
Fred should not minus as he wanted to find how much more yim spent. 4357 + 320 = 4677
    So, the answer is $4677.
    Question M:
Ben should minus than plus as he must find how heavy is the cow first than plus the cow's weight and the lion's weight. 180 - 36 = 144 144 + 180 = 324 So, the answer is 324 kg.
    Question H:
    Tony should plus 60 and 150 to get how many ice-cream sticks did ted have and use the answer to minus 50 to find out how many ice-cream sticks Samy had the answer plus the answer = 370 370 + 60 = 430. 60 + 150 = 210 210 - 50 = 160 210 + 160 = 370 370 + 60 = 430 So, the answer is 430 ice-cream sticks.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Question L:
Amy you did the question wrong because you should add not subtract because it said more than that means that it should add up the two numbers so this is the working [$4357+$230=$4587] so the total sum is $4587 so the answer must be $4587.
